Why is effective communication important?

Communication, whether you like it or not, is present in every setting be it in business, in our workplace, in our class, at home or in our social life. Practicing both your communicating and listening skills is essential in getting your idea across and receiving the speaker’s idea.

Despite knowing the importance of communication and listening, I must admit that I do not practice them effectively. Whenever I enter a new environment , I would often feel out of place because I have a problem  interacting with people whom I barely know. Sometimes I felt small and incompetent because of my command of language. I am afraid that I will be judged upon the way I communicate, thus at times I choose the keep my thoughts to myself. In a day-to-day conversation, I realize that I am always running out of topics to talk to my friends. Silence is golden while too much silence between friends will lead to awkwardness. Hence I always envy those who has lots to say even to a stranger. Why is that so? How did they do it? I figured that it is time that I step out of my comfort zone and learn some of these communication skills from this module as it will be even more important in future in my workplace.

  2. Hi Lisu!

Don't feel small because of your command of language or that you will be judged by the way you communicate.

In fact, be more daring to make mistakes so you can learn from there! You have already taken a step further towards improving yourself by willing to step out of your comfort zone. For sure in this ES2007S class, nobody will be judging you!

I too think silence is golden, especially in the library. Sometimes, even though people are "whispering", their conversation can be heard from a few tables away. This is when effective non-verbal communication comes in handy!

  3. Thank you shawn for your encouragement. I will definitely try to be more active in class in order to benefit more out of this module.

As for non verbal communication in library, gestures such as staring at those who "whisper" sometimes does help. :)Try it!

  4. Hi Li Su,

Yes you shall be sent to present the answers if we happen to be in the same group again.

I would love to witness your staring incidents! (provided it does not invoke a gang fight)

  5. Hey Li Su,
If you always keeps silence in the past, why don't you make a change in this course. We are all on the journey (on the same boat) to improve our communication.
Personally, I think keeping silence at the right time is good, but knowing to voice out at the right time is better

  6. HELLOOO LISU!:D

I agree with what you have shared to a great extent!! Totally voicing out what I am feeling too!

Myself come from a Chinese-speaking family and I think 90% of my conversation is in mandarin! My command of English language is poor too :( sometimes when I would like to talk to my friends in English, especially the closer friends, it just feels weird haha. The conversation would just automatically tuned back into the mandarin channel after a few lines! There was once an awkward incident when I was conversing with a friend from a English-speaking family, however as mandarin was my usual and preferred medium for communication I started the conversation in Mandarin and he replied me in English. However, oblivious of the medium of his reply, I continue to reply him in mandarin again and that carry on throughout the whole conversation. At the end of the conversation, another friend laughed and commented: “don’t you feel funny that both of you are talking in two different language?!” It then dawned on me that there is really a need to note HOW we are conveying the message, if not it would cause awkward situation like this!:X

At times I do feel inferior to talk in front of a large crowd especially when I am not too familiar with the people present or when the people around speak so fluently and in perfect English! In such scenario, I tend to be especially quiet! However, do not feel small and incompetent as I believe a lot of us are feeling this way too! Just like me! You are not alone, lets work hard in this together! :) I believe our communication skills can be improved through practices!:D it is commendable and I admire your courage of taking a leap out of your comfort zone to take this ES module!:) Communication is an essential and fundamental way to connect with another person and this makes it such an important and “must-have” skill in today’s society. LETS GAMBATE!!!<3 and try to converse in proper English when we see each other kays?!? :D:D

  7. Thanks, Lisu, for the concise and well-focused post!

I like the way you developed the discussion, from sharing the fact that communication is omnipresent, to why communicating effectively is important, why you decided to work on refining your communication skills, and finally the hopes you have for yourself and how it may benefit you in the future - and ALL in 219 words! It definitely makes for a very easy read. Good job, Lisu.

I am already looking forward to your second blog post!

    Thanks for the effort!
